Welcome to my first blog post of Brighter Soul. I have been a seeker of happiness for years, and decided to create this site to share what I’ve learnt along the way and explain why I feel it’s important to follow a spiritual path.
Following a spiritual path can help you develop deeper awareness, find peace, and a sense of purpose beyond external success. It’s not about dogma or belief systems, but about understanding yourself more and aligning with a universal truth that is beyond religion or culture.
I also want to demystify spirituality. It has practical applications that you can use in your everyday life - not just for the "woo-woo" crowd or people sitting on top of a mountain chanting "om" or hugging trees (though that’s a wonderful way to be spiritual too!).
I have been on a spiritual path since the age of about twenty. I will happily go through some of the books, tools, courses I have done over the years in future blogs, but to start with I’d like to share some of the reasons I started to follow a spiritual path:
Emotional balance
Having balance in my life helps me navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience. Once I developed self-awareness, I started to react less to the external chaos that’s going on around me. Think about how nice it would be not to react to people and situations around you. One of the key things I learnt in life is that you only have control over one thing in your life, and that’s you, so having control over how you perceive and react to external situations is key to having an emotionally balanced life.
Connection to something greater
Whether you call it the universe, consciousness, energy, the creator, God or source, spirituality reminds me that I am part of something bigger than me. This perspective helps me have a deeper sense of belonging, and feel like someone else has my back. This might be a difficult concept for some to grasp, as God has had a bit of a rough time lately, but think of it as a higher part of yourself, your intuition or the smarter part of you if you prefer. We are more than just flesh and bones, we are just too incredible to just be that.
Authenticity
A spiritual path encourages me to shed societal conditioning and old cultural beliefs. Over the years I have been able to peel back the layers of expectations, fears, and limiting beliefs to live from a place of authenticity. Imagine just being your true self, not worried about what people think about you, and changing the way you act around people to fit in. This is a big one. Imagine being so fearless that you are just you and can speak your truth wherever you go without fear of ridicule, wouldn't that be great?
Healing & growth
Emotional wounds and trauma often remain buried until we consciously work through them. The spiritual practices that I have embarked upon over my life have helped in releasing old patterns, emotional blockages and fueled me to grow exponentially. Every time I did a new practice, read a book, took a course I peeled off another layer. It's a continuous practice, we never really get this one done, but the more you work on yourself the easier the game called life becomes.
Expanded awareness & conscious living
Spirituality isn’t about escaping reality but becoming more present in it. As my awareness expands, I have become more conscious of my thoughts, actions, and energy. I have become less reactive to the world around me leading to a more intentional, peaceful and meaningful life.
Freedom from fear & suffering
Fear and suffering often stem from attachment to past experiences and resistance to change. A spiritual path taught me how to embrace challenges from a place of growth, let go of control, and trust the natural flow of life. Challenges still come up but they don’t feel like problems, just opportunities to grow.
Inner peace
One of my favourite benefits of following a spiritual path is the peace I feel within. I wake up almost every day feeling good, and the days that I am not I pivot very quickly into a better feeling place. No more negative rumination (which is a happiness killer and doesn’t serve you) . I feel guided and unshakable no matter what life throws at me.
Better relationships & compassion
When you develop inner peace, you naturally extend it to others. Spirituality has deepened my empathy, patience, and compassion, and has improved my relationships with those around me.
Grateful for life's gifts
The spiritual path I follow reminds me to stay grateful. I learnt a while back that you can't be grateful and angry at the same time. It's a powerful practice that shifts our focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in our lives. When we cultivate gratitude, we train our minds to notice the simple joys, the everyday blessings, and the lessons hidden within challenges. It anchors us in the present moment, providing contentment and peace, even during difficult times. Gratitude opens our hearts, raises our vibration, and deepens our connection to ourselves, others, and the universe.
How to follow a spiritual Path?
There’s no single way to be spiritual. It’s a deeply personal journey. I myself have practiced many different ways. You might find your path through:
Meditation and mindfulness
Nature immersion
Energy work (e.g., breathwork, Reiki, Qi Gong)
Journaling and self-reflection
Creative expression
Practicing gratitude and presence
Yoga
Exercise
Dancing
The key is to stay open, curious, and committed to self-exploration. A spiritual path isn’t about arriving at a final destination, it’s about evolving, expanding, and embodying a deeper truth.
To start with, I have created a guided meditation, which you can use to help you remember who you truly are. Click on the link below and enjoy.
